Remington rolling block
Here is an old beast that I`ve owned for about 15 years, but I know very little about it. Guy I bought it from said the guy he bought it from claimed it was a N.Y. State militia rifle, but you know how that stuff goes sometimes.
It`s a 50-70 caliber in good working order. I have fired it on occasion. Believe it or not it has a bright bore with only 3 dark spots. Good rifling. Markings on the tang. "xx" are letters that are obscured by a ding in the metal. Probably supposed to be Remingtons` & Son, but not sure. Remingtons` xx on NY USA Pat May 30 Nov 15th 1864 April 17th 1868 Aug 27th 1867 Nov 7th 1871 On the top of the butt plate. There is an L above the screw and a G below the screw. There is a 45 below the G. There is an S on the left side of the frame and on the left side of the barrel. Anyone know much about these guns?

Re: Remington rolling block
State of N.Y. orders about 15,000 rifles and carbines in 50-70 for National Guard in 1872. They have three line Remington markings and Pat. dates on the tang. Metal is finished blue with the action case hardnened. Wood is oil finished walnut. Barrel is held by three bands muzzle band and triggerguard haver sling swivles. Hammer has a very high curved spur. Stock often has inspector initials of H.B.H. in a cartouch or serpentine banner, most often on left side at wrist but have seen one on the right side. Some are also marked US. N.Y. on right side of butt. Top of comb on stock ussualy has regimental letter over number on it.
Forgot to mention being on the wrist inspector markings are frequently missing or unreadable due to normal wear during use. Last edited by chef : 06-29-2010 at 04:53 PM. |

Re: Remington rolling block
I`ve been told (since posting this here and in another forum) that this is a NY militia rifle, but the barrel and stock have been shortened. Originally would have been 36", now cut to 28" and they shortened the stock to match dropping one of the barrel bands.
All but just a touch of the original finish is gone. Someone has put cold blue on the frame.

Re: Remington rolling block
The marking on the tang is Illon, NY. The NYSM rifle had a tall hammer spur, checkering on the top of the spur and checkerring in the shape of a shield on the rolling block tab. I'll try to insert 2 pictures.
mrnambu No luck with the pictures. It says file error when I upload them. They are jpg. Can someone tell me how to attach the scaans? I'll try again. Last edited by mrnambu : 01-02-2012 at 04:32 PM. |
